Oils, Varnishes + Waxes
When choosing a natural coating for timber in your home there are a number of options available from wax, to oils to natural varnish. Bio Paints natural coatings allow wooden surfaces to breathe while giving protection and natural beauty to your home and living environment.
As a general guide:
- varnishes look similar to an oiled finish but are more durable and water resistant. Bio Paints Hard Varnish is our hardest wearing natural finish for timber and is our best selling product. Other varnishes come as coloured finishes.
- oils are a popular choice due to their subtle appearance. They are harder wearing than a wax finish, but are also susceptible to water-marking in certain areas and some are not suited to wet spaces, e.g. kitchens and bathrooms, due to the possibility of the oils absorbing moisture and developing fungi growth. Oils can be difficult to apply evenly
- waxes are the softest of the finishes and have provide a lovely subtle glow to timbers which can be achieved with burnishing. Susceptible to water-marking, wax will melt with hot water and requires more frequent re-coating than other finishes
